Las Vegas Teen Center Session at UWC Conference

John Braman and I participated in a session today at UWC's Martin Luther King, Jr. memorial conference, "Choose Your Weapon: Fighting Non-Violently". About 20 teens attended the session, representing UWC and local schools.
The session participants produced a list of activities and programs that could be hosted at the center, and had a discussion about ways to attract more teens to the planning process.
Stay tuned for U7 Facebook and MySpace groups started by UWC students.

Resources: Garrett Smith Architectural Plans

In 2002, Garrett Smith Architects of Albuquerque designed a renovation of the building for use as charter school. While the purpose of the building and the approach to its renovation have changed, the drawings are a valuable look at the many issues facing any reuse scenario.

History of the Building, Part One

U7 is the latest incarnation of a historic building, the First Baptist Church, part of the Las Vegas National Heritage Area. The building was constructed in 1885, but burned down in 1922 and was rebuilt shortly thereafter. The architect was O. M. Sperry. The building was nominated to the National Register in 1985, along with most of the other historic properties in the downtown. It was last used for church services in 2001.

In 2001, Dosia Smith bought the building with the intention of starting a charter school. She donated the building to UWC last year.
